A senatorial aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Edo South, Ehiozuwa Agbonayinwa, has expressed regret over his decision to leave the All Progressives Congress for the NDC, alleging irregularities in the party’s primary process.
Agbonayinwa, a former member of the House of Representatives, claimed that despite emerging victorious in the party’s senatorial primary, efforts were being made to prevent him from appearing on the ballot.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, the former governorship aspirant described his experience in the NDC as worse than what he encountered in previous political parties.
According to him, the party initially attempted to persuade aspirants to step down for one another before eventually conducting a direct primary after consensus talks failed.
He said the outcome of the primary conducted on May 29 had yet to be officially announced, a development he described as unusual and troubling.
Agbonayinwa further alleged that the NDC’s national leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, had personally encouraged him to contest the Edo South senatorial seat and purchase the nomination forms.
The politician, however, claimed that Dickson later distanced himself from the discussions during a recent meeting, contrary to earlier assurances given to him.
“I moved from the frying pan into hell fire,” Agbonayinwa said, expressing disappointment over what he described as a lack of transparency in the party’s handling of its primary election process.
