A Bauchi-based school proprietress , Dorcas Okechukwu, has narrated what she described as a remarkable survival story after she was reportedly pronounced dead at two hospitals before medical personnel at a third facility detected signs of life and commenced emergency treatment.
Okechukwu, a graduate of Human Physiology from Madonna University, said the incident occurred on April 15, 2025, shortly after she accompanied her mother, Ann Okechukwu, to the United Kingdom Embassy in Abuja.
Speaking about the experience, she recalled developing a severe headache after returning to her hotel, prompting her to suspect high blood pressure. She said she took a bath and intended to have her blood pressure checked at a nearby pharmacy before losing consciousness.
"I decided to rest, hoping the headache would ease. The next thing I knew was waking up in a hospital about two weeks later," she said.
According to her, relatives later informed her that she suffered convulsions and stopped breathing before she was rushed to a hospital. She claimed doctors at the first and second hospitals informed her family that she had died.
Okechukwu said her brother subsequently contacted a doctor in the United Kingdom, who advised that she be taken to Cedar Crest Hospital in Abuja. She alleged that although the hospital initially recommended transferring her to a mortuary, a doctor conducted another examination and detected a pulse.
"The doctor immediately directed that I be taken to the emergency unit for treatment," she recalled.
She said doctors later carried out several medical investigations, including CT and MRI scans, which she claimed revealed no major abnormalities except swelling of the brain believed to have resulted from the seizure.
According to Okechukwu, she regained consciousness after spending about two weeks in hospital and was later informed that she had suffered a partial stroke. She added that she temporarily lost parts of her memory and underwent rehabilitation to relearn how to walk.
She also shared personal spiritual experiences she believes contributed to her recovery, saying listening to a sermon by Apostle Joshua Selman strengthened her faith. She further claimed that after experiencing intense fear months later, her pastor, Ben John, encouraged her to meditate on biblical passages and repeatedly recite Psalm 91, after which the fear subsided.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Okechukwu described her survival as a miracle and expressed gratitude for what she considers a second chance at life.
"I now appreciate the value of good health more than ever. God's mercy has been overwhelming, and I remain thankful for preserving my life," she said.
Vanguard reported that it could not independently verify the medical circumstances surrounding Okechukwu's account, while the spiritual experiences she narrated remain her personal testimony.
