The national leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said he is willing to reconcile with Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, despite the political differences that strained their relationship.
Kwankwaso stated that he harbours no resentment towards the governor and would welcome him back if he chose to return to their political fold.
Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa, the former Kano State governor said Yusuf was the one who left the political movement and insisted that the door remained open for reconciliation.
According to him, forgiveness is an essential virtue in politics and leadership, adding that political disagreements should not permanently destroy relationships.
“I still have affection for Abba. I did not push him away; he was the one who left. If he decides to return, I will not reject him. Politics is full of disagreements and reconciliations,” Kwankwaso said.
The relationship between the two politicians deteriorated after Yusuf reportedly left the New Nigeria People’s Party, under which he emerged governor in the 2023 election, and aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The development sparked criticism within the Kwankwasiyya movement, which played a major role in Yusuf’s emergence as governor.
Kwankwaso maintained that the governor’s electoral success was largely driven by the popularity and structure of the movement.
He said Yusuf was deliberately chosen as the party’s candidate to demonstrate the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano politics.
“We selected him and supported his candidature because we wanted to showcase the strength of our movement. His victory reflected the influence of the Kwankwasiyya political structure,” he said.
The former presidential candidate also stressed the need for leaders to be tolerant of differing opinions, noting that successful leadership requires patience, understanding and a willingness to forgive.
He added that people often hold different views due to their backgrounds and experiences, making tolerance an indispensable quality for political leaders.
Kwankwaso’s remarks come amid continued political realignments and speculation over the future relationship between key actors in Kano State politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
