At least three passengers were feared dead on Monday evening following the derailment of a Warri–Itakpe passenger train in Agbor area of Delta State.
The incident, which occurred along the busy rail corridor, caused panic among passengers and disrupted rail movement on the route.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the accident in a statement issued by its Managing Director, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, noting that emergency and rescue operations were immediately activated after the derailment.
According to the corporation, all passengers on board the train have been accounted for as rescue teams continue to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected.
“Sadly, three fatalities have been confirmed at this time,” the NRC said, adding that efforts were ongoing to determine the full circumstances that led to the incident.
The rail operator also stated that relevant authorities had commenced a full assessment of the accident site, while medical and emergency support were being extended to survivors.
It assured the public that further updates would be provided as investigations progress, urging Nigerians to rely only on verified information from official channels.
“The thoughts and prayers of the Nigerian Railway Corporation are with the victims and their families,” the statement added.
The corporation did not immediately disclose the number of injured passengers, but confirmed that normal operations on the route had been suspended pending safety checks.
The Warri–Itakpe rail line, one of the country’s major intra-city rail services, has experienced occasional operational disruptions in recent years, raising renewed concerns over rail safety and maintenance standards.
Investigation into the cause of the derailment was still ongoing as of press time.
