The Kano State Government has approved the sum of N1.5 billion for the conduct of a mass wedding programme targeting 1,500 couples across the state.
The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Corps, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists in Kano, saying preparations for the exercise had reached an advanced stage.
According to him, prospective couples are currently undergoing mandatory medical screenings, including tests for HIV, hepatitis, pregnancy and genotype compatibility, among others.
Daurawa explained that the government would spend about N1 million on each couple, covering household items and post-marriage support packages aimed at easing the burden of starting a new family.
He said beneficiaries would receive essential items such as beds, mattresses, beddings, furniture and food supplies as part of the intervention.
The Hisbah chief further revealed that each bride would receive a dowry of N100,000, alongside an additional N100,000 earmarked as take-off capital to support small-scale businesses after the wedding ceremony.
He noted that the mass wedding initiative was one of the campaign promises made by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and described the programme as a fulfilment of that commitment.
Daurawa added that participants had been sensitised on the importance of marital stability and encouraged to seek mediation through the Hisbah Board before considering divorce.
He also urged intending couples to undergo genotype screening to reduce the risk of giving birth to children affected by sickle cell disorder.
According to him, the date for the mass wedding ceremony will be announced after receiving final approval from the governor.
