The Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested a 25-year-old man, Obasi Ifesinachi, for allegedly vandalising a telecommunications mast in Iju Community, Akure North Local Government Area of the state.
The Command's Public Relations Officer, Daniel Aidamenbor, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the suspect was apprehended following intelligence-led surveillance mounted around the facility after residents raised concerns over repeated attacks on the installation.
Aidamenbor said the operation followed a formal complaint submitted on June 24, 2026, by the Youth Leader of Iju Community over the activities of suspected vandals targeting an MRM telecommunications mast station.
According to the statement, NSCDC intelligence operatives, working with members of the community, placed the facility under covert surveillance, leading to the arrest of Ifesinachi on June 25, while other members of the suspected gang reportedly fled the scene.
The spokesman explained that preliminary investigation showed that the suspect and his accomplices allegedly scaled the perimeter fence of the facility with the intention of dismantling and stealing valuable equipment.
He added that a forensic examination of the site revealed that the mast had been deliberately loosened at its foundation bolts, while several components had already been removed.
Aidamenbor further stated that the suspect allegedly confessed during interrogation to participating in the vandalism and admitted visiting the facility on several previous occasions to carry out similar acts without being apprehended.
He also disclosed that investigations revealed the suspect had allegedly been banished from Iju Community in May 2026 over his reported involvement in the robbery of a residential building located opposite the telecommunications mast.
He added that the suspect later made a written confessional statement after investigators confronted him with intelligence and physical evidence linking him to the crime.
The State Commandant, Oluyemi Ibiloye, commended residents of Iju Community for supporting security agencies with useful information and urged communities across the state to remain vigilant in protecting critical national assets.
He warned that the Command would sustain its crackdown on infrastructure vandals and assured that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
