Indications have emerged that former senator and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo, may be on her way back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following her recent resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A close associate of the former Ogun Central senator and governorship aspirant disclosed this on Wednesday, saying she had already hinted at her next political destination.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said Obasanjo had expressed a firm commitment to continue her political engagement in Ogun State under the PDP platform.
“I can confirm that Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has informed me that she is moving to the PDP. Her political focus is firmly on Ogun State and its future direction,” the source said.
Obasanjo had on Monday announced her resignation from the APC, citing alleged rejection, disrespect, and poor treatment by the party leadership.
In a letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, the former senator detailed her grievances over the party’s internal processes.
She particularly faulted the consensus arrangement that produced Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s governorship candidate, insisting that the process violated established guidelines.
Obasanjo claimed she initially accepted the consensus arrangement but was neither consulted nor carried along before Adeola was eventually declared the party’s candidate.
She also alleged that some of her supporters were attacked and prevented from accessing the venue where the announcement was made.
Despite the controversy, she said she publicly congratulated Adeola on the same day and pledged support for his governorship ambition.
According to her, Adeola later reached out to appreciate her gesture and visited her weeks afterwards, during which her supporters presented several requests for consideration.
She added that the senator promised to respond within a week, but more than two months after, no feedback had been received.
Obasanjo said the lack of response and what she described as neglect of her supporters left her with no option but to quit the ruling party.
She, however, commended President Bola Tinubu, the Ogun State APC chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, and leaders of the Ogun Central senatorial district for their support during her brief stay in the party.
The former senator returned to active politics earlier in January after registering as a member of the APC in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.
She had been largely absent from partisan politics since 2011 when she lost her re-election bid to the Senate and relocated to the United States.
Her political re-emergence gained attention late last year when billboards bearing her name and political message surfaced across Abeokuta, sparking speculation about a possible comeback ahead of the 2027 elections.
