No fewer than 15 motorists have been arraigned by the Ondo State Police Command for allegedly driving vehicles without registration number plates or with concealed plates during a statewide enforcement operation.
The command said the exercise, which commenced on June 22, followed a directive by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to strengthen compliance with vehicle registration laws and improve public safety.
Police spokesperson in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed in a statement on Friday that officers intercepted the affected vehicles during the operation and transferred them to the State Traffic Department for necessary legal action.
He added that the suspects had since been taken before a court of competent jurisdiction as part of efforts to enforce existing traffic regulations and discourage violations.
Commenting on the exercise, the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, said the operation was designed to reinforce security rather than inconvenience law-abiding residents.
"Vehicles without registration numbers or those with covered number plates create serious security concerns because they can easily be used by criminal elements to avoid identification. The enforcement will therefore remain a continuous exercise," the commissioner said.
Ohagwu explained that proper vehicle identification was essential to effective policing, noting that it enables security agencies to trace vehicles and their owners during criminal investigations.
The command urged motorists to comply with registration requirements and other traffic laws, assuring residents that similar operations would continue as part of measures to safeguard lives and property across the state.
