A routine patrol by operatives of the Ondo State Police Command has led to the arrest of a suspected armed robber and the recovery of a locally made pistol, a live cartridge and a battle axe in Igbotako, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.
The command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, revealed the development in a statement on Sunday, explaining that the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Temitope Ikumuniwon, was intercepted by officers attached to the Igbotako Division during a surveillance operation.
Jimoh said the incident occurred at about 7 a.m. on June 17 around Omotosho Motor Park, off the Lagos/Ore Expressway, where the suspect reportedly aroused suspicion while trying to board a commercial vehicle travelling to Iju-Oke.
He explained that the operatives searched a bag in the suspect's possession and recovered a locally made pistol, one live cartridge and a battle axe, leading to his immediate arrest.
"The recovered items have been taken into custody as exhibits, while investigations are ongoing to establish the origin of the firearm, the purpose for which the weapons were being conveyed and the suspect's possible connection with armed robbery and other criminal activities," the statement read.
The police spokesman added that detectives had intensified efforts to identify and arrest other individuals who might be linked to the suspect, noting that the case would be transferred to the appropriate investigative unit for further action before prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, Felix Ohagwu, praised the officers involved in the operation and reaffirmed the command's resolve to sustain the fight against crime.
He also acknowledged the contribution of members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria to the successful operation.
Jimoh urged residents of the state to continue supporting security agencies by volunteering prompt and reliable information that could assist in preventing crime and bringing offenders to justice.
