The Nigeria Police Force in Kebbi State has launched a manhunt for a man identified as the husband of a 25-year-old woman, Sa’ima Sani, who died after sustaining gunshot injuries in a controversial incident in Geza village, Bagudo Local Government Area.
Security sources said the incident, which occurred on June 9, has triggered investigations into what may have been a case of accidental discharge involving a locally made firearm.
According to preliminary findings, the deceased was allegedly asked by her husband, Auwalu Hassan, to bring a loaded Dane gun that had been kept inside their residence. It was gathered that while carrying the weapon towards the rear of the house where her husband was reportedly waiting, the firearm discharged unexpectedly, striking her in the stomach and left hand.
Residents rushed the injured woman to the General Hospital in Bagudo, where medical personnel battled to save her life. She was, however, confirmed dead while receiving treatment.
Her remains were later documented by investigators before being released to the family for burial in line with local customs.
Police authorities said the husband fled the area immediately after the incident, prompting a coordinated search effort to locate and apprehend him for questioning.
The command noted that investigations are ongoing to establish whether the incident resulted from negligence, unsafe handling of the firearm, or other criminal circumstances.
The case has since thrown the Geza community in Bagudo LGA into shock, with residents expressing concern over the handling of locally made weapons in homes.
The Kebbi State Police Command urged members of the public to exercise extreme caution in the storage and handling of firearms, warning that improper use continues to result in avoidable fatalities.
Authorities assured that a full investigation would be conducted to uncover the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and ensure accountability where necessary.
