It was a moment of pomp and celebration on Friday as a prominent stakeholder of Akungba-Akoko, Chief Tolu Oriyomi, laid his mother, Princess Rhoda Oriyomi, to rest in a grand ceremony attended by dignitaries and well-wishers from within and outside the community.
The funeral service, held at Emmanuel Anglican Church, Akungba-Akoko, while the reception for guests took place at Community Comprehensive High School, attracted several notable personalities, including the Alale of Akungba-Akoko, His Royal Majesty, Oba Isiaka Oseni Adu, traditional rulers, political leaders, community stakeholders and residents.
The late octogenarian, who was blessed with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was highly respected in Okusa Quarter and across Akungba-Akoko for her exemplary lifestyle, kindness and commitment to family and community development.
Speaking shortly after the deceased was committed to mother earth, Chief Tolu Oriyomi reflected on the life and virtues of his mother, describing her as a woman of integrity, discipline and compassion.
He said, “Mama was a good woman in Okusa and Akungba entirely. She gave us quality education and taught us good morals, honesty and respect for elders. Everything we are today is largely due to the solid foundation she laid for us.
“She was not only our mother but also a mentor and counsellor to many people in the community. Her life was a testimony of hard work, sacrifice and love for humanity. We will continue to uphold the values she instilled in us.”
Chief Oriyomi also called on residents of Akungba-Akoko to embrace unity and work collectively for the progress and development of the town.
Also speaking, the President of Ultimate Club, Akungba-Akoko, Elder Jacob Ogidigbo, extolled the virtues of the deceased, describing her as a caring mother whose heart was filled with the milk of human kindness.
According to him, “Mama Rhoda Oriyomi was a woman of peace who related with everyone without discrimination. She was always ready to support people and encourage younger generations to pursue meaningful goals.”
“She lived a fulfilled life and left behind a legacy of love, humility and service to humanity. Her death is a great loss not only to her family but also to the entire Akungba community.”
A friend of the family, Barrister Duro Adonis, said the late Princess Rhoda Oriyomi exemplified discipline, good character and selflessness, urging other elderly women to emulate her admirable qualities.
Similarly, a former member of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon. Abiodun Ogunbi, said the deceased would be greatly missed by residents of Akungba-Akoko because of her contributions to the growth and harmony of the community.
However, a daughter-in-law of the deceased, Mrs. Aderonke Oriyomi, said she would greatly miss Mama for her kindness, guidance and unwavering support to members of the family.
“She was more than a mother-in-law to me. She treated me like her biological daughter and always stood by me during difficult times. Her advice and prayers helped shape many aspects of my life.”
“We are comforted by the fact that she lived a good life and impacted many people positively. On behalf of the family, I appreciate everyone who came to honour her memory and support us during this period.”
Mrs. Oriyomi also expressed appreciation to family members, friends, associates and well-wishers who attended the burial ceremony and prayed for God to reward them abundantly for their love and support.
