Fresh controversy has emerged over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, with members of his family disputing claims that he died from complications linked to diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.
One of the deceased’s sons, Isyaka Rabe, said his father had never suffered from diabetes or high blood pressure, contrary to information reportedly released by the Katsina State Government after the retired army officer’s death.
Speaking during an interview with Deutsche Welle (DW), Isyaka described reports attributing his father’s death to diabetes as misleading, insisting that the family was unaware of any such medical condition.
According to him, speculation persists that the retired general may have died after being bitten by a snake, a belief he said was strengthened by the final video reportedly released by the kidnappers. He, however, noted that only God knows the exact circumstances surrounding his father's death.
While praying for the repose of the late officer’s soul, Isyaka portrayed him as a humble, deeply religious and peace-loving man, adding that he died in service to the nation and should be remembered as a hero.
The deceased’s son also said the family had no information about how the body of the retired military officer was recovered.
He explained that several people sought clarification after funeral arrangements were announced, but maintained that the family was not briefed on the process through which the remains were retrieved.
Isyaka further dismissed reports circulating online that his mother, who was abducted alongside the late general, had regained freedom.
“Our mother is still being held by the kidnappers. She has not been released,” he stated.
His position echoed an earlier claim by one of the late general’s daughters, Adda Abubakar, who had maintained on social media that her father was not diabetic and alleged that a snake bite led to his death while in captivity.
The retired army officer and his wife were kidnapped on May 30 along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli Road in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
News of his death emerged days later while he was still being held by his abductors.
Although the Katsina State Government announced that the retired general died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension, family members and other sources have continued to insist that he succumbed to a snake bite during captivity.
