A tricycle rider identified simply as IK is currently on the run after allegedly beating his female lover, a mother of two, to death and abandoning her body alongside their children in Ogbogoro community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The tragic incident was said to have occurred along CPM Street axis of Ogbogoro on Tuesday, June 2, throwing residents into shock.
A resident, identified as Mr Senibo, told our correspondent that the disturbing discovery was made around 7:00am when neighbours found the lifeless body of a woman and two female children, aged below six, inside a parked tricycle.
According to him, operatives of the Ozuoba Police Division had already arrived at the scene before his arrival.
He further disclosed that the elder child was later questioned by police and reportedly gave a harrowing account of events, alleging that her father had assaulted their mother at a guesthouse where the family lodged on Monday night.
The child was said to have narrated that the suspect, after discovering that the woman had become weak and unresponsive, allegedly moved her out of the guesthouse, placed her and the children inside the tricycle, and later abandoned them before fleeing the scene.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Blessing Agabe, said the matter was reported by a passerby who noticed the victims inside a blue tricycle parked by the roadside.
She explained that a police patrol team was immediately deployed to the scene, where officers discovered the woman’s lifeless body alongside the two children aged about five years and six months.
According to her, the five-year-old child told investigators that her father used an object to assault her mother during the night, leaving her critically injured.
She added that the suspect allegedly rushed the victim to an undisclosed hospital after noticing her condition had worsened, where she was later confirmed dead.
ASP Agabe further stated that the suspect thereafter abandoned the children and the corpse inside the tricycle and fled.
She confirmed that a sister of the deceased has since identified the body, which has been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The police also disclosed that the children have been taken into protective custody by the deceased’s family, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
