The Governing Council of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Igbariam, Anambra State, has approved the dismissal of five staff members, including two professors, over allegations bordering on sexual misconduct, harassment, intimidation, extortion, and other unethical practices.
The decision was taken during the institution’s 122nd Governing Council meeting held on June 12, according to a statement issued on Sunday in Awka by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Harrison Madubueze.
Those affected by the disciplinary action include Professor C.C. Nwabachili, former Dean of the Faculty of Law, and Professor Chike Osegbue of the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences.
Others are Dr. I.H. Iheukwumere and Dr. Emeka Nwabunnia, both of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Uli Campus, as well as Mrs. Ifeoma Kakulu, a Principal Assistant Registrar who served as Examination Officer in the Faculty of Law at the time of the alleged offences.
Madubueze said the council found the affected staff culpable of various infractions, ranging from sexual harassment and abuse of office to intimidation, extortion, and gross misconduct, all of which violated the institution’s ethical standards.
He added that the Governing Council reiterated its commitment to discipline and accountability, stressing that acts capable of tarnishing the university’s reputation would not be tolerated.
“The council reaffirmed its stance on discipline and integrity, warning that any behaviour that undermines the institution’s values would attract strict sanctions,” he said.
He further noted that the decision reflects the university’s resolve to maintain a safe and credible academic environment aligned with its vision of building a forward-looking institution.
The spokesperson said the disciplinary measure underscores COOU’s determination to enforce ethical standards and sustain public confidence in its academic and administrative systems.
