US invites Nigerian students to apply for opportunity fund programme

The United States Mission in Nigeria has commenced applications for the 2026 edition of the EducationUSA Opportunity Fund Programme, aimed at supporting academically exceptional Nigerian students seeking admission into American higher institutions.

According to a statement released by the mission, applications opened on June 15 and will close on June 30, with successful candidates receiving assistance to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies in the United States.

The programme, managed by EducationUSA Nigeria under the Public Diplomacy Section of the US Mission, is designed to help talented students overcome financial barriers associated with the admission process.

The mission said the initiative targets students with strong academic records, leadership qualities and a demonstrated commitment to contributing positively to society.

It explained that the programme forms part of efforts to expand educational opportunities while strengthening ties between Nigeria and the United States through academic exchange and talent development.

The Opportunity Fund Programme covers essential pre-admission expenses, including standardised examination fees, application charges and other costs associated with securing admission into US institutions.

The statement noted that priority would be given to applicants whose academic interests align with critical fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies considered strategically important.

To qualify, applicants are expected to submit academic records, a personal statement, evidence of leadership and outstanding achievements, as well as documents demonstrating research potential and readiness to comply with US visa and immigration regulations.

The mission added that beneficiaries would be required to maintain high ethical standards throughout the programme.
