20yr-old conductor to get 10 strokes of cane for slapping passenger

A Kaduna Magistrates' Court has ordered that a 20-year-old bus conductor, Abubakar Shehu, be given 10 strokes of the cane for assaulting a female passenger during a dispute over transport fare.

The presiding magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, handed down the sentence on Wednesday after the defendant pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of assault.

Emmanuel said the court exercised leniency because the convict admitted the offence without wasting judicial time. He, however, warned Shehu against engaging in similar conduct in the future, stressing that subsequent offences would attract stiffer sanctions.

The court also directed the convict to sign an undertaking to be of good behaviour.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that the incident occurred on July 24 at Kawo, Kaduna.

According to the prosecutor, an argument erupted between the conductor and the complainant, Hadiza Rabiu, over transportation fare, during which the defendant slapped the passenger twice in the face.

Leo said the offence contravenes the provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
