South Africa international midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just days after representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The South African Football Players Union confirmed the player's death in a statement on Saturday, describing his passing as a devastating loss to the country's football community.
Adams featured in three matches for South Africa during the 2026 World Cup, where he was among the key members of the national team.
Reacting to the development, the midfielder's mentor, Brendine Johnson, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the tragic loss.
"He was really positive about returning after the World Cup and continuing his career. He knew what lay ahead and was fully prepared. He loved spending time at home with his family," Johnson said.
Describing the death as unexpected, Johnson appealed for privacy for the bereaved family as they mourned the footballer's passing.
"Nobody expected this. At this moment, I don't even have words to say, but we ask that the family's privacy be respected," he added.
The cause of Adams' death had yet to be disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
