A 47-year-old teacher accused of flogging a 12-year-old student to death at a school in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, has surrendered to the police.
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed on Saturday that the suspect, identified as Mrs. Dim Ebere, voluntarily reported at the Neni Police Station after she had earlier been declared wanted by the command.
The police had on Friday launched a manhunt for the teacher and appealed to members of the public to provide information that could lead to her arrest.
Ikenga said the suspect was taken into police custody and would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka to enable detectives conclude their investigation into the case.
He said the suspect's surrender followed coordinated efforts by the command's Safe School Protection Squad, officers of the Neni Divisional Police Headquarters, as well as sustained engagement with community leaders and other stakeholders in Adazi-Ani.
According to him, the police appreciated the cooperation of the Adazi-Ani community and the traditional institution, noting that their support played a key role in the suspect's decision to surrender.
Ikenga assured the bereaved family and residents that the command remained committed to carrying out a thorough investigation and ensuring that anyone found culpable would face justice.
He also urged residents to remain peaceful, avoid taking the law into their own hands and continue to provide credible information that would assist the police in the ongoing investigation and other security operations across the state.
