Two men, identified as Felix Emmanuel and Friday Austine, have been arraigned before an Akure Magistrate's Court over their alleged involvement in an unlawful firearms transaction.
The defendants were docked on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and illegal dealing in firearms.
The prosecutor, Akeredolu Olusegun, told the court that the alleged offences were committed on June 18 and 19, 2026, at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, in Ondo State.
According to the prosecution, Emmanuel allegedly sold a single-barrel cartridge gun to a man identified simply as Sammy, in violation of the provisions of the Firearms Act.
Olusegun further alleged that Austine facilitated the transaction by acting as an intermediary between the seller and the buyer.
He told the court that the alleged offences contravened Section 516 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006, and Section 28 of the Firearms Act, Cap. F28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Counsel to the defendants, Femi Adetoye, urged the court to admit his clients to bail on liberal terms, assuring the court that they would be available for trial and would not interfere with the prosecution's witnesses.
In his ruling, Magistrate Damilola Sekoni granted each defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
The magistrate thereafter adjourned the case until August 12, 2026, for commencement of hearing.
