Paul University, Awka, Anambra State, has suspended a member of its academic staff, Ven. Cornelius C. Eze, over allegations of sexual misconduct, pending the outcome of internal disciplinary proceedings and investigations by security agencies.
The institution announced the suspension in a statement issued on Friday by its Public Relations Officer, Rev. Godisplan Onukwufor, saying the decision followed allegations brought before the university management on July 14.
According to the university, Eze, an Anglican priest and Practical Biology Technologist in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, was placed on indefinite suspension as investigations continue.
The management said it immediately alerted the appropriate security agency after the allegations surfaced to prevent a breakdown of law and order following tension reportedly generated among students.
It stressed that the suspension was an administrative measure taken without prejudice to the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
Meanwhile, a video circulating on social media allegedly shows the suspended lecturer fleeing from his office on campus while dressed in boxer shorts amid a commotion. However, the authenticity of the footage could not be independently verified.
The university did not comment on the video or the circumstances surrounding it, limiting its response to the ongoing investigation.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining ethical standards, the institution said it operates a zero-tolerance policy against sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, abuse of office and other acts capable of endangering the welfare and dignity of students and staff.
It added that any staff member or student found culpable of violating the institution's regulations or the laws of the country would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with due process.
The management also disclosed that counselling and psychological support would be provided for the affected student or students and other members of the university community impacted by the incident.
It urged the public to avoid speculation or spreading unverified information that could compromise the investigation, assuring parents, students and stakeholders of its commitment to providing a safe and secure learning environment.
The university said further details would be made available at the appropriate time as investigations progress.
