The University of Lagos has unveiled a set of safety guidelines for female students as part of efforts to curb cases of sexual harassment and rape on its campus.
As reported by PUNCH, the advisory, issued through the institution's Student Affairs Division, was displayed on a roll-up banner within the university and outlines precautionary measures aimed at helping students protect themselves from sexual abuse.
Among the recommendations, the university urged female students not to "shake hands carelessly with any man," avoid secluded places with men, refrain from accepting unnecessary favours, and remain vigilant when offered drinks.
The advisory also cautioned students against watching pornographic materials, accepting intoxicants, or yielding to pressure, urging them to be assertive and learn to say no. It further warned that casual sex could result in unintended pregnancy.
According to the Student Affairs Division, the campaign forms part of the university's counselling initiatives designed to educate students on personal safety and ways to reduce the risk of sexual violence.
The institution has recorded a number of sexual assault allegations in recent years, prompting renewed awareness campaigns and preventive measures within the campus community.
One of the most prominent cases emerged in April when a 20-year-old undergraduate told an Ikeja High Court that she was allegedly raped by a lecturer, Dr Samuel Ojogbo, in an underground office on the university premises.
The student alleged that the incident occurred on August 22, 2025, after the lecturer asked her to see him following an examination. The case is currently before the court.
UNILAG also witnessed another high-profile sexual assault case in 2019 when the Lagos State Government arraigned five students over the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old student.
The university's latest advisory is seen as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen awareness and improve student safety on campus.
