Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, on Monday said the Court of Appeal judgment on the party's leadership did not invalidate the ADC's primary elections conducted ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku's position was contained in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, who accused some political actors of deliberately misrepresenting the court's ruling to mislead Nigerians and weaken the opposition.
He maintained that the appellate court's decision was limited to the conduct of the party's state congresses and the tenure of its state executive committees, insisting that it had no bearing on the validity of the party's primary elections.
According to him, there is a clear legal distinction between the election of party executives through internal congresses and the nomination of candidates through statutory primary elections conducted under the Electoral Act.
Shaibu argued that courts only determine issues brought before them, stressing that the judgment should not be interpreted beyond the matters presented for adjudication.
He also criticised what he described as attempts to use social media narratives and political propaganda to portray the ruling as a setback for the party's presidential ticket.
The former vice president said the ADC had directed its legal team to challenge the judgment at the Supreme Court, expressing confidence that the apex court would provide a final interpretation of the issues arising from the appeal court's decision.
He urged party members and supporters across the country to remain calm, united and committed to the party's political objectives, saying the campaign to offer Nigerians an alternative leadership ahead of the 2027 elections remained on course.
"The road to 2027 remains open, and the resolve of the Nigerian people cannot be overturned by propaganda," the statement added.
