The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress in the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned the recent killing of scores of residents in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, accusing the President Bola Tinubu-led administration of failing in its constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property.
Atiku, in a statement issued on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, described the attack as a tragic reminder of the country's worsening security situation, saying the continuous loss of innocent lives was unacceptable.
The former Vice President lamented that the massacre of men, women and children in Southern Kaduna reflected what he called the government's inability to tackle insecurity despite repeated assurances to Nigerians.
He said no nation could claim meaningful progress when citizens were being killed in their homes and communities by armed criminals operating with impunity.
The ADC presidential candidate also criticised senior government officials for allegedly focusing on what he described as claims of international commendation instead of addressing the country's security challenges.
According to him, Nigerians are more concerned about their safety than any perceived recognition from foreign countries, stressing that the protection of citizens should remain the primary duty of any government.
Atiku argued that effective governance should be measured by the ability of leaders to guarantee the safety of lives and property rather than by public relations campaigns or diplomatic endorsements.
He called for an urgent review of Nigeria's security architecture, urging the Federal Government to adopt intelligence-driven operations, ensure the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators of violent attacks and implement proactive measures to prevent future incidents.
The former Vice President expressed sympathy with families of those killed and injured in the attack, praying for the repose of the deceased and speedy recovery of the wounded.
He also urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the killings and ensure those responsible were brought to justice.
Atiku further called on security agencies to strengthen surveillance and protection around vulnerable communities, particularly as the country gradually approaches another election season, warning that innocent lives must never become casualties of political interests.
He maintained that history would judge governments not by claims of international recognition but by their commitment to protecting citizens during periods of insecurity.
