The House of Representatives on Thursday approved an Executive Bill proposing the creation of state police, advancing efforts to reform Nigeria's policing structure through a decentralised security system.
The approval came during plenary after lawmakers set aside an earlier constitutional amendment bill on state police and adopted the Executive Bill as the preferred legislative framework.
The latest development follows the Senate's passage of a similar bill, bringing both chambers of the National Assembly a step closer to introducing a dual policing model for the country.
The proposed legislation seeks to establish state-controlled police formations to operate alongside the Nigeria Police Force in a bid to improve security, enhance community policing and address rising criminal activities nationwide.
The passage represents a major milestone in the campaign for state policing, which has gained support from many stakeholders who believe it will strengthen the nation's security architecture.
The bill will now move to the next constitutional stage required before it can become law.
