A Chief Magistrates' Court sitting in Mararaba, Nasarawa State, has dissolved the marriage between Hauwa Usman and her husband, Habib Adamu, after reconciliation efforts failed.
The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Mohammed Shomo, on Wednesday confirmed a single Islamic divorce pronouncement (talaq) earlier made by Adamu, saying the decision was based on the mutual consent of both parties.
Shomo held that the marriage should be dissolved after all attempts to reconcile the couple proved unsuccessful. He also ruled that the custody arrangement would remain without prejudice.
The magistrate directed Usman to observe the mandatory three-month waiting period, known as Iddah under Islamic law, before entering another relationship or remarrying.
Usman had approached the court seeking the dissolution of the marriage on the grounds of neglect. She also requested custody of their child, stating that she had solely catered for the child's welfare over the past five years.
Adamu admitted to the allegations brought against him during the proceedings.
Before delivering the ruling, the court had granted the couple a two-week window to explore an amicable settlement, but the efforts did not yield a reconciliation, leading to the dissolution of the marriage.
