An 18-seater Toyota Hiace commercial bus was completely destroyed by fire on Tuesday along the Akungba-Ikare Road in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, with the driver reportedly fleeing the scene before emergency responders arrived.
The incident occurred at the Okerigbo area of the community shortly after the vehicle, said to be returning from a long-distance trip, was engulfed by flames.
However, no casualty was recorded in the fire.
The cause of the inferno had yet to be determined as of the time of filing this report.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said officers from the Akungba Divisional Police Headquarters responded swiftly after receiving a distress report.
He said preliminary investigations showed that the bus was completely burnt, while the driver was nowhere to be found when police operatives arrived at the scene.
Jimoh said, “The Ondo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the fire incident involving an 18-seater commercial bus which occurred on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Okerigbo Area along the Akungba-Ikare Road, Akungba-Akoko. Police operatives from the Akungba Division promptly responded to the scene upon receiving the report.
“Preliminary findings revealed that the bus was completely burnt; however, no casualty was recorded. The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene before the arrival of the police and efforts are underway to locate him as part of the ongoing investigation.”
The police spokesperson added that the command had launched a full-scale investigation to establish the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He appealed to residents with useful information to assist the investigation, assuring the public of the command's commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
