El-Rufai's doctor admits writing disputed medical report, denies forgery

The medical doctor linked to the controversial medical report submitted in support of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai's bail application has admitted authoring the document but denied any involvement in forgery or falsification.

The doctor, Bello Abubakar, made the disclosure in a statement to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission during its investigation into the disputed report.

Abubakar maintained that although he prepared the medical report, he did not conspire with anyone to fabricate information or produce a false document for use in court proceedings.

He also distanced himself from Mohammed Bala Aliyu, the man accused of relying on the report to depose to an affidavit filed in support of El-Rufai's bail application.

According to him, “I cannot recall anybody with the name Mohammed Bala Aliyu, and I have never authorised him to depose an affidavit.”

The ICPC had accused the oncologist of knowingly issuing a false medical report intended to influence official actions relating to El-Rufai's case before the Kaduna State High Court.

The disputed document, dated June 10, 2026, and titled Medical Report and Expert Opinion for Urgent Medical Intervention, is alleged by the anti-graft agency to contain misleading information and to have been presented for official use despite concerns over its authenticity and compliance with standard medical procedures.

However, Abubakar insisted he acted strictly within the scope of his professional responsibilities and denied participating in any scheme to mislead authorities.

He added that his relationship with El-Rufai dates back several years, explaining that he first met the former governor through his wife, whose first child he delivered, and later became El-Rufai's physician after he registered as a patient at the National Hospital, Abuja, around 2005.
