A 28-year-old widow, Tosin, has alleged intimidation and attempts to dispossess her of her late husband's property after she was reportedly locked out of her home by her father-in-law barely eight days after her husband's death.
The incident, which gained widespread attention on social media, has prompted intervention by the Lagos State Government, with authorities confirming the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.
An activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, who shared videos of the incident on his X account, alleged that the woman's father-in-law padlocked the family's residence, leaving the widow stranded outside with her two children.
According to him, the deceased died on July 20, 2026, after which members of his family allegedly moved into his residence in the Igbo Oluwo area of Ikorodu and ordered the widow to confine her belongings and those of her children to a single room.
Gwamnishu further claimed that some of the deceased's personal belongings had already been shared among family members, while plans were underway to dispose of his vehicle.
He said the widow had been subjected to threats after taking her ordeal public, adding that a petition would be submitted to the Lagos State Police Command while calling on the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency to intervene.
"Our demand is simple. The in-laws should vacate the house and allow Tosin to mourn her husband peacefully," the activist said.
Reacting to the development, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said it immediately established contact with the widow after the case went viral.
The agency disclosed that the widow reported receiving threats to her life, physical assault and intimidation following her husband's death, adding that the matter had already been reported at the Owutu Police Division.
It said it subsequently engaged the police handling the case and confirmed that the suspect had been arrested and was in custody while investigations continued.
The agency reiterated the Lagos State Government's commitment to protecting the widow and her children, assuring that all relevant institutions would work together to ensure justice is served in accordance with the law.
