Tragedy struck Yancibi Village in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State after a 45-year-old man and his 15-year-old daughter lost their lives in an abandoned dry well.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, saying the victims were identified as Abubakar Abdullahi and his daughter, Fiddausi.
According to the statement, the Tsanyawa Fire Service Office received a distress call on Monday evening that the father and daughter had fallen into the abandoned well.
Firefighters from the Tsanyawa station were immediately deployed to the scene, but efforts to rescue the victims were suspended due to darkness and the difficult conditions around the well.
The service said an emergency rescue team from its headquarters resumed the operation on Tuesday morning and eventually recovered the two victims.
"Our rescue team successfully recovered the victims from the well. They were brought out unconscious and were later confirmed dead," the statement said.
The Fire Service disclosed that the bodies were released to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani, for burial.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the teenage girl accidentally fell into the well, while her father reportedly entered it in an attempt to save her but became trapped, leading to the loss of both lives.
The agency sympathised with the bereaved family and urged residents to avoid entering wells without proper rescue equipment or trained emergency personnel to prevent similar tragedies.
