Nigerian students seeking postgraduate education abroad can now apply for the Australian Government’s 2026 Research Training Programme scholarship, a fully funded scheme designed for Master’s by Research and Doctor of Philosophy candidates.
The scholarship, administered through participating Australian universities, provides financial support covering full tuition, annual living stipends and other research-related expenses for successful applicants.
Unlike many international scholarship programmes, applications are not submitted through a central government portal. Instead, prospective candidates are required to apply directly to their preferred Australian universities, which independently manage admission and scholarship selection.
The programme is open to both domestic and international students, including Nigerians, provided they satisfy the admission requirements and English language proficiency criteria of their chosen institutions.
Introduced in 2017, the Research Training Programme replaced the Australian Postgraduate Award, International Postgraduate Research Scholarship and the Research Training Scheme. It is aimed at producing highly skilled researchers for careers in academia, industry and other professional sectors.
For the 2026 academic session, the scholarship offers a minimum annual living allowance of AUD34,315 for full-time students, although some universities may provide higher stipends depending on available funding.
Successful Master's by Research candidates can receive funding for up to two years, while PhD students may enjoy financial support for as long as four years.
Application deadlines differ across universities, with several institutions accepting applications between July and October for early 2027 admission, while others operate multiple admission windows throughout the year.
Applicants are expected to submit key documents, including a research proposal, curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, recommendation letters and proof of English language proficiency through recognised examinations such as IELTS, TOEFL or PTE, depending on institutional requirements.
Many participating universities also provide additional benefits, including Overseas Student Health Cover, relocation assistance and paid leave provisions for eligible scholars.
Prospective applicants have been advised to carefully review the admission requirements, eligibility criteria and application deadlines of their chosen universities before submitting their applications, as there is no single application platform for the scholarship.
