The Federal Government has commenced applications for its newly introduced consumer credit programme aimed at enabling Nigerians to acquire laptops, smartphones, tablets and other digital devices through instalment payments.
The initiative, known as the Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices Programme, is being implemented by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
The programme was unveiled in Abuja by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, alongside the Managing Director of CREDICORP, Uzoma Nwagba.
According to the government, the scheme is designed to make digital devices more affordable by allowing eligible Nigerians to pay over time instead of making full upfront payments. It also prioritises locally assembled laptops to support domestic manufacturing.
Interested applicants are required to register through the programme's official portal by providing details such as their state of residence, employment status, income category, preferred digital device and the intended purpose of the device.
Applicants are also expected to indicate whether they belong to any recognised digital talent programme, including the Three Million Technical Talent Programme, Andela Learning Community, ALX Africa, HNG Internship, AltSchool Africa, Learn2Earn and Genesys Tech Hub, before consenting to the verification of their information.
The current pilot phase is restricted to 1,000 beneficiaries under the Federal Government's 3MTT programme, with the first batch of 77 laptops already distributed to qualified fellows in Abuja.
Nwagba said the remaining devices would be allocated to successful applicants in other states in phases as the programme expands nationwide.
Although the application portal accommodates participants from several digital training initiatives, CREDICORP has yet to announce when beneficiaries outside the 3MTT programme will begin receiving devices.
The corporation is also yet to disclose details of the loan structure, including repayment duration, interest rates and any required initial deposit for beneficiaries.
