The Students' Union of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ondo State Government to resolve the ongoing strike by the institution's branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The union, in a statement jointly signed by its President, Folagbade Greatness A., and General Secretary, Amos Oluwatiimileyin S., expressed concern that the industrial action, which has lasted 14 days, had paralysed academic activities and disrupted the university's academic calendar.
The students said the prolonged strike had forced many undergraduates to leave the campus, while others who remained were facing emotional, psychological and financial hardship due to the uncertainty surrounding the resumption of lectures.
According to the union, the continued closure of academic activities is delaying graduation, disrupting academic plans and placing additional financial burdens on parents and guardians.
The students appealed to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other relevant stakeholders to urgently engage the leadership of ASUU-AAUA and ensure a lasting resolution of the dispute through dialogue.
The union said it had exhausted all peaceful engagement options and was left with no choice but to issue a 72-hour ultimatum for the government to provide a practical and satisfactory response to the lecturers' demands.
It warned that failure by the government to demonstrate commitment within the stipulated period would compel the union to mobilise students for lawful and peaceful actions to protect their educational rights and collective interests.
While insisting that the ultimatum was not a threat, the students described it as a desperate appeal driven by the frustration and uncertainty facing thousands of undergraduates, urging the state government to intervene immediately to prevent further disruption of academic activities.
