My husband cheated me in land sale, gave me N100,000 from N500,000 proceeds — Woman

A woman, Rokibat, has approached the Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking the dissolution of her relationship with Busari over alleged domestic abuse, betrayal and irreconcilable differences.

The plaintiff told the court that her husband's family created division in their relationship, leading to the breakdown of their once peaceful union.

She further alleged that Busari shortchanged her after selling a piece of land they jointly acquired for N500,000, claiming he handed her only N100,000 from the proceeds.

Rokibat also accused the defendant of repeatedly assaulting her, alleging that the attacks often occurred at night and eventually forced her to leave their home.

She urged the court to grant her custody of their four children, alleging that Busari had separated the children by placing them in the care of three of his siblings.

The plaintiff also requested that the court order the defendant to pay N50,000 monthly for the children's upkeep, while taking full responsibility for their education and healthcare.

Busari was absent when the matter came up for hearing despite reportedly being served with court processes.

In her testimony, Rokibat said they never performed either traditional or statutory marriage rites, adding that Busari neither met her parents nor paid her bride price.

She, however, recalled that they initially enjoyed a loving relationship until interference from his family allegedly created tension between them.

She also claimed she stood by him during a prolonged illness, but after they sold their jointly owned land and she received only N100,000 out of the N500,000 realised, their relationship deteriorated.

She said the defendant became hostile and physically abusive, prompting her to seek the court's intervention.

The court president, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case until April 8 for further hearing and directed that a fresh hearing notice be served on the defendant.
