A man, Jameed, has asked the Grade A Customary Court sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Tawakalitu, over allegations of infidelity, violence, neglect and misconduct.
The plaintiff alleged that his wife repeatedly abandoned their home for days without informing him of her whereabouts, while also engaging in extramarital affairs and openly communicating with her alleged lovers in his presence.
Jameed further claimed that Tawakalitu neglected her responsibilities at home, alleging that she spent their children's school fees on unnecessary expenses and left the house untidy most of the time.
He told the court that despite receiving N60,000 monthly for feeding, the defendant allegedly prepared only one meal a day, leaving him and their children hungry on several occasions.
The plaintiff also accused his wife of exposing their 15-year-old daughter to immoral behaviour, alleging that she told the teenager she was old enough to begin having sexual relationships with men.
According to him, Tawakalitu frequently assaulted him during disagreements and once struck him in the face with the heel of her shoe, leaving him with a permanent scar.
He added that she later vandalised his property after he ended the relationship and remarried.
Jameed prayed the court to dissolve the marriage, grant him custody of their children and restrain the defendant from threatening or harassing him.
Tawakalitu was absent from court despite reportedly being served with hearing notices.
In his testimony, Jameed said he married the defendant under native law and custom after paying N5,000 as bride price. He alleged that their marriage collapsed because of her repeated infidelity, neglect of the children and violent conduct.
He claimed he once found their children washing plates at a roadside canteen after their mother allegedly took them there to work in exchange for food.
He further alleged that their 15-year-old daughter later informed him that her mother had encouraged her to sleep with men.
The plaintiff said he eventually asked Tawakalitu to leave his home and remarried, but she allegedly continued visiting his residence and office to attack him and damage his belongings.
After hearing his testimony, the court president, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case for further proceedings.
