The United Kingdom has reaffirmed that citizens of Nigeria and 114 other countries and territories must obtain visas before travelling to the country for visits lasting less than six months.
The requirement is contained in the updated Immigration Rules Appendix Visitor, released by the UK Home Office on July 1, 2026.
According to the updated guidance, nationals of the affected countries must obtain entry clearance before travelling to the UK unless they qualify for exemptions provided under the immigration rules.
The Home Office also stated that stateless persons and travellers using documents other than a national passport or, where applicable, a national identity card, must obtain entry clearance before travelling, except where such documents were issued by the UK.
It added that limited exemptions apply to nationals of the People's Republic of China and Taiwan in line with the provisions of the updated immigration rules.
Countries listed under the revised requirements include Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, India, Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Egypt, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Zimbabwe and more than 90 others across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean and South America.
The updated guidance means citizens of the affected countries must secure a visa before travelling to the UK for tourism, family visits, business engagements or other short-term stays of less than six months, unless they fall under one of the specified exemption categories.
The Home Office said the revised rules form part of the UK's current immigration framework governing entry into the country by short-term visitors.
