Nine persons abducted by suspected terrorists have regained their freedom after reportedly escaping from their captors' hideout when the guards allegedly fell asleep in Katsina State.
The victims were rescued by troops of the 17 Brigade during a routine foot patrol at Anguwan Doka in Faskari Local Government Area, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama.
Makama disclosed in a post on X that the troops encountered the victims at about 8:30am on July 15 while conducting the patrol.
The rescued group comprised three women, four men and two children, who were said to have fled the terrorists' enclave before stumbling upon the military patrol team.
During preliminary questioning, the victims reportedly told the soldiers that they were kidnapped along the Tsafe-Kuchere Road in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
They said they seized the opportunity to escape after the armed men guarding them allegedly fell asleep, trekking for several hours until they were found by the troops.
The victims also identified themselves as residents of Kuchere community in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Makama said the military had taken the victims into protective custody and would hand them over to the appropriate authorities for reunification with their families after the necessary procedures.
