The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspected motorcycle robber, recovered a stolen motorcycle and uncovered suspected forged vehicle documents in separate intelligence-led operations across the state.
The command's spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, saying the operations marked another breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown on criminal activities under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu.
According to the statement, one of the operations took place at about 8:35pm on July 9 along Adepetu Street, off Flagship area of Ondo Town, where police arrested a 32-year-old suspect, John Anthony, for allegedly attempting to dispossess a commercial motorcyclist of his motorcycle.
Police said the victim, Felix Olusola, had picked up two passengers from Ife Garage, but became suspicious after they allegedly failed to state a clear destination and repeatedly directed him around different parts of the town.
Sensing danger, the rider reportedly raised the alarm and struggled with one of the suspects, while the second suspect fled with a bag. Police operatives, assisted by residents, responded swiftly, arrested Anthony and recovered the motorcycle.
A search conducted on the suspect reportedly led to the recovery of a large screwdriver believed to have been intended for the operation. The police added that the suspect could not provide a satisfactory explanation for his presence in the town, while efforts were ongoing to arrest his fleeing accomplice.
In another operation, detectives uncovered a suspected stolen motorcycle and equipment allegedly used for forging purchase receipts after a complaint was lodged by a businessman over the authenticity of a sales receipt presented for verification.
The police said investigations revealed that the receipt was forged and that the unregistered black TVS ladies' motorcycle linked to it had earlier been reported stolen.
A subsequent search of the suspect's residence led to the recovery of a laptop allegedly containing forged receipts, the suspected stolen motorcycle, two army camouflage trousers, a Samsung television set and a Domoclip air fryer.
The Commissioner of Police, Ohagwu, commended the commercial motorcyclist for his vigilance and courage, as well as members of the public who assisted officers in making the arrest.
He reaffirmed the command's commitment to tackling robbery, theft and other criminal activities across the state, urging residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information that could aid ongoing investigations and the arrest of other fleeing suspects.
