No fewer than 100 commercial drivers and passengers in Ondo State on Wednesday benefited from a free medical outreach organised by the Federal Road Safety Corps as part of efforts to promote safer roads.
The exercise, organised by the Ondo Town Unit Command of the FRSC, was held at Lagos Park in Oka, Ondo, under activities marking the Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme Week.
Beneficiaries underwent free medical checks, including blood pressure and blood sugar tests, as well as health counselling aimed at detecting conditions that could endanger motorists and other road users.
Speaking during the exercise, the Unit Commander, Assistant Corps Commander Joseph Ajayi, said the initiative was carried out in partnership with the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, Ondo.
Ajayi explained that the health of drivers plays a critical role in road safety, noting that routine medical examinations help to identify health challenges capable of causing crashes.
He said the blood pressure checks were intended to detect hypertension, while blood sugar screening was designed to identify diabetes and prevent medical emergencies that could occur while driving.
The unit commander also used the occasion to educate fleet operators and commercial drivers on the core objectives of the Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme, stressing the need for transport operators to comply with safety regulations.
According to him, the scheme also seeks to register unregistered fleet operators and strengthen compliance with established road safety standards across the transport sector.
Chairman of Lagos Park, Oka, Mr Akindolani Koleola, commended the FRSC for the initiative, describing it as timely and beneficial to commercial drivers and other road users.
A passenger, Mrs Omolara Adenuga, also praised the exercise, saying the free medical screening demonstrated the corps' commitment to safeguarding the health and welfare of motorists and passengers alike.
