Over 40 residents reportedly abducted as bandits attack communities

Fresh attacks by armed bandits have forced residents to flee Tashar Mayanchi and more than 10 neighbouring communities in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, with over 40 people reportedly abducted.

The latest wave of violence has left several communities deserted as frightened residents abandoned their homes in search of safety.

Security analyst Bakatsine disclosed the development in a post shared on X on Thursday, saying the attacks persisted for four consecutive days.

According to him, more than 40 residents remain in captivity following the raids, while the mass displacement has heightened fears over the worsening security situation in the area.

He warned that the continued occupation of the affected communities by bandits could expose the Zamfara-Sokoto highway to further attacks and cut off nearby settlements.

"Repeated bandit attacks forced residents to flee Tashar Mayanchi and over 10 surrounding communities in Maru LGA, leaving once-thriving villages largely deserted. More than 40 people are still in captivity after four straight days of attacks," Bakatsine said.

He added that the continued displacement of rural residents raises concerns about the expanding influence of criminal gangs in the area and questioned how many more communities would have to be emptied before stronger security measures are implemented.
