Thirty-one of the 39 pupils rescued after spending weeks in captivity following their abduction in Oyo State have been discharged from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.
The pupils, alongside some teachers, were kidnapped on May 15 in Oriire Local Government Area of the state before security operatives rescued them on July 10.
After regaining their freedom, the victims were initially taken to the Military Hospital in Ibadan for medical assessment before they were handed over to the Oyo State Government on Monday. They were later transferred to the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital for further treatment and observation.
The hospital's Public Relations Officer, Omotayo Ogunleye, confirmed on Wednesday that 31 of the rescued pupils had recovered sufficiently and had been discharged.
According to him, the remaining eight pupils are still receiving medical care and are under observation, expressing optimism that they would also be discharged soon.
He, however, did not disclose the specific health conditions of the pupils still on admission.
"Thirty-one children have been discharged, while eight are still undergoing medical observation. They will be discharged as soon as doctors certify them fit," Ogunleye said.
The rescued pupils were among dozens of students and teachers abducted during the attack in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that drew widespread condemnation and renewed concerns over insecurity in schools across the country.
