The Ondo State Police Command has foiled an attempted kidnapping in Upenmen Community, Owo Local Government Area of the state, following a swift joint security operation that forced armed men to abandon their mission and flee.
The command's spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement, saying the operation was carried out after gunmen invaded the residence of Prince Olumuyiwa Ademulegun on the evening of July 15, 2026.
According to the police, the suspected kidnappers stormed the residence and opened fire in what was believed to be an attempt to abduct the occupant.
The police said operatives attached to the Owo 'A' Division, in collaboration with personnel of the Nigerian Army and local hunters, responded promptly to a distress call and engaged the attackers in a gun duel.
The security operatives were said to have overpowered the assailants, forcing them to flee into a nearby forest without succeeding in their mission.
The intended victim was rescued unhurt, while no casualty or injury was recorded during the operation.
Jimoh said security personnel immediately launched a search of the surrounding forest in an effort to apprehend the fleeing suspects, adding that the operation was still ongoing.
He stated that enhanced security measures had also been deployed across the Upenmen community and adjoining areas to prevent a recurrence of such attacks.
The spokesperson quoted the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, as reassuring residents of the command's unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
Ohagwu urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, noting that intelligence from the public remains critical to the ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.
