The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old woman, Maimunatu Idris, for allegedly severing her boyfriend's genitals during an altercation at a hotel in Kano.
The suspect, said to be from Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State, was arrested following the incident, which occurred at Durbar Hotel in the Badawa area of Kano.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, saying preliminary investigation indicated that the woman allegedly attacked the victim with a knife after learning that he intended to marry another woman.
Kiyawa said detectives attached to the division swiftly responded to the report, arrested the suspect at the scene and recovered the knife allegedly used in the attack.
He added that the injured man was immediately rushed to the Abubakar Imam Urology Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment, while investigation into the incident continues.
"Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer led a team of detectives to the scene. The suspect was arrested and the weapon was recovered as an exhibit, while the victim was taken to hospital for medical attention," the police spokesman said.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, condemned the attack and cautioned members of the public against resorting to violence in resolving personal disputes.
He also assured residents that the command would carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
An eyewitness, identified as a security operative working near the hotel, alleged that the suspect had invited the victim to lodge at the facility after discovering his alleged plan to end their relationship and marry another woman.
The witness claimed the woman allegedly carried out the attack while they were together in the hotel before she was overpowered and handed over to the police.
The police, however, said investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
