The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old woman, Rabi Abubakar, for allegedly pouring boiling water on her pregnant co-wife during a domestic dispute, an incident that reportedly resulted in the death of the victim's newborn baby.
The suspect, said to be a resident of Daba Village in Bauchi Local Government Area, was apprehended by operatives of the 'C' Division, Tafawa Balewa Estate, following an investigation into the alleged assault.
aid thePolice s incident occurred on July 17 at about 7:30 a.m. when the suspect allegedly attacked her 30-year-old co-wife with hot water during a disagreement at their residence.
The victim reportedly sustained severe burns and was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, where she received medical attention.
While on admission, she delivered a baby boy on July 19. However, the infant, who reportedly suffered serious burn injuries during the attack, died the same day. The mother is said to be responding to treatment and is in stable condition.
Confirming the incident on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Nafiu Habib, said the case was reported to the police on July 22 by the officer in charge of the Dabe Police Outstation in the Soro Division.
Habib said police operatives visited the scene immediately after receiving the report, arrested the suspect and commenced preliminary investigation into the matter.
According to him, the suspect allegedly confessed to the offence during interrogation, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
"The suspect is in police custody, while the matter has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law," the police spokesman said.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the alleged attack, describing domestic violence as unacceptable and assuring that justice would be pursued.
He also urged residents to embrace peaceful means of resolving family disputes and encouraged victims and witnesses of domestic violence to promptly report such incidents to security agencies for timely intervention.
