A middle-aged woman, identified as Mrs. Affiong Peters, has died after collapsing shortly after stepping out of a commercial bus in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
The incident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Edgerly area near William George, with preliminary reports suggesting that the woman suffered a medical emergency.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the driver of the commercial minibus, Okon John, reported the matter at the Atakpa Police Station.
According to the police, Mrs. Peters had alighted from the vehicle alongside seven other passengers before suddenly sitting on the ground and becoming unresponsive.
Eitokpah said concerned passengers immediately returned her to the bus and rushed her to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.
He, however, disclosed that doctors later confirmed her dead on arrival.
The police spokesperson said the deceased's relatives had been identified and informed of the development, while arrangements were being made to preserve her remains.
Eitokpah added that there was no evidence of foul play in the incident, noting that the matter was being handled in line with established police procedures as investigations continue.
