The Nigeria Democratic Congress has called for the immediate suspension of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, over his attendance at the inauguration of the Lagos chapter of the City Boy Movement, describing his action as partisan.
The opposition party made the demand on Tuesday following the launch of the group, which pledged to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The event, held in Ikeja, attracted political leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups and members of the All Progressives Congress.
Videos circulating on social media showed the police commissioner arriving at the venue and exchanging greetings with members of the pro-Tinubu group.
Reacting in a statement posted on its official X handle, the NDC condemned the commissioner's presence at the gathering, alleging that it undermined the neutrality expected of the police.
The party argued that the appearance of the state's police chief at a political event raised concerns about his ability to discharge his responsibilities impartially during future elections.
"We condemn in the strongest terms the appearance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police at a partisan event promoting a particular candidate in the forthcoming general election," the party stated.
The NDC urged the police authorities to suspend and sanction the commissioner, insisting that law enforcement agencies must remain neutral and inspire public confidence during the electoral process.
It also called on the police leadership to reassure Nigerians that officers would provide equal protection to all voters and political parties, irrespective of their affiliations.
The party further demanded the resignation of the commissioner, maintaining that his attendance at the event had compromised the image and integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
