A youth leader in Plateau State, Pam Fom, has been reportedly shot by suspected gunmen barely 24 hours after he publicly condemned the recent killing of two youths in his community.
Fom, who heads the Dorowa Babuje Youth Council in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, was said to have come under attack on Wednesday while travelling to a neighbouring community.
The incident was disclosed by conflict reporter Masara Kim Usman, who said he had interviewed the youth leader a day earlier over the deadly attack on Dorowa Babuje community.
Usman alleged that the same armed men accused of carrying out the earlier assault targeted Fom after the interview.
“I spoke with him yesterday after two young men from his community were killed, and today he was shot,” the journalist wrote in a post on Facebook.
Before the attack, Fom had narrated how the assailants allegedly attacked two youths riding a motorcycle before advancing to a mining site, where several workers sustained gunshot injuries.
He also appealed to the government and security agencies to step up efforts to protect residents, warning that continued attacks could push locals to resort to self-defence.
Another community leader, Titus Badung, also confirmed the incident, describing the attack as disturbing.
According to him, Fom was attacked only a day after granting an interview in which he decried the worsening security situation in his community and mourned the killing of two residents.
There was no official statement from the Plateau State Police Command or other security agencies on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
