14-year-old boy drowns while retrieving shoe from canal

A 14-year-old boy has drowned while attempting to retrieve his shoe from a canal behind Millennium Park in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, noting that the incident occurred on Saturday during rainfall.

According to Iniedu, the boy reportedly fell into the canal while trying to recover his shoe amid the downpour.

He said the boy’s body was subsequently recovered and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The FPRO stated, “Police received a report that a 14-year-old boy drowned in a canal behind Millennium Park while attempting to retrieve his shoe during rainfall.”

Iniedu added that the deceased’s father declined an autopsy and requested the release of his son’s remains for burial.

“The father declined an autopsy and requested the release of the corpse for burial, which was granted. CID Abuja is investigating,” he said.

The police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death.
