A 15-year-old boy, Isah Muhammad, has lost his life after drowning in a pond popularly known as Sterling Pond in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps confirmed the incident on Wednesday through its Public Relations Officer, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, who said operatives responded promptly after receiving a distress call.
Mahmud disclosed that personnel from the NSCDC Takur Site Division were immediately deployed to the scene following reports that the teenager had gone under while swimming in the pond along Disina Road.
He said the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The victim, a resident of Bokoto Quarters in Dutse, was rescued from the water and rushed to the General Hospital, Dutse.
According to the NSCDC spokesperson, doctors at the hospital confirmed the teenager dead on arrival.
He added that the body was later released to the deceased's family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Jigawa State Commandant of the NSCDC, Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, sympathised with the bereaved family, praying for the peaceful repose of the deceased and the strength for his relatives to bear the loss.
