The Senator representing Kwara Central, Saliu Mustapha, has left the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid reported disagreements within the party’s structure in the state.
Mustapha announced his resignation on Thursday through his verified Facebook page, publishing a letter dated August 14 and addressed to the APC chairman of Gambari Ward 1, Ilorin East Local Government Area.
The lawmaker said his decision followed consultations with party stakeholders, political associates, supporters and constituents in Kwara Central and other parts of the state.
He attributed his exit to recent developments within the Kwara State chapter of the APC, noting that the decision followed considerable reflection.
According to the senator, political allegiance should be anchored on the interests of the people, clear principles and a sense of purpose.
Mustapha said he decided to seek a different political platform because he believed the direction of the APC in the state no longer sufficiently reflected those ideals and the expectations of the people he represents.
He thanked the national leadership of the party, including President Bola Tinubu, for the relationships and experiences he gained during his years as an APC member.
The senator, however, assured his constituents that his departure from the ruling party would not affect his responsibilities or commitment to them.
He said he would continue to serve the people of Kwara Central and remain committed to the development of Kwara State and Nigeria.
Mustapha’s resignation comes at a time of heightened political activity in Kwara State, with politicians and various interest groups beginning to position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
The senator had previously emerged as one of the prominent members of the G15/TOP group, comprising aggrieved stakeholders within the Kwara APC.
