Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, has returned to the political spotlight after being named Director of Women’s Mobilisation in the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election.
Edu’s appointment is contained in the 2027 APC campaign council list announced on Saturday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Her return to a prominent political assignment comes about two years after she was suspended as a minister and subsequently dropped from the Federal Executive Council following allegations surrounding the handling of public funds.
Edu was listed as one of the officials saddled with the responsibility of mobilising APC members and women across the country ahead of the party’s campaign for Tinubu’s re-election.
The former minister is expected to coordinate women-focused mobilisation programmes and initiatives designed to strengthen the party’s support base among women ahead of the 2027 presidential poll.
She previously served as the APC National Women Leader, a position she assumed in 2022, becoming the youngest person to occupy the office.
Edu’s political career began in Cross River State, where she served in various capacities, including Special Adviser on Community and Primary Healthcare, Director-General of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency and Commissioner for Health.
Her appointment as minister in 2023 elevated her profile nationally, but her tenure was cut short after President Tinubu suspended her in January 2024 and directed an investigation into alleged financial transactions involving the humanitarian affairs ministry.
Despite the setback, Edu has remained active in political circles, and her latest appointment places her once again at the centre of the APC’s electoral mobilisation machinery.
The campaign council is headed by Tinubu as chairman, with Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, as vice chairmen. Former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, is the Director-General, while Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, is the secretary.
With her new assignment, Edu is expected to deploy her experience in women and grassroots mobilisation to rally APC women and expand the party’s reach as the 2027 election approaches.
